I’m Serge Van Cauwenbergh, a freelance documentary and travel photographer based in Belgium. I create authentic photo stories about people and cultures for travel magazines, outdoor brands and editorial platforms. Not the perfect image, but the honest one.
Photography has always been a journey of finding the right visual language. It started with words: as a photo blogger and reviewer of photographic equipment, I learned the technical side of the craft, from the camera to the final edit in Lightroom and Photoshop. Before I discovered my true calling in documentary and travel photography, I explored various corners of the medium. I spent time shaping light for portraits in studios and on location, waited for the perfect skies in landscape photography, and briefly touched upon street and architectural photography.
My interest in creating more in-depth work emerged during my first documentary projects. Whether I was documenting the intimate, personal story of both my grandmothers, or exploring the complex realities of places like Chernobyl, Rwanda, and The Gambia, I found myself drawn to the human element. But it was during a trip to Georgia that all these pieces finally fell into place. That journey provided absolute clarity on the direction I wanted to take: telling authentic stories about people and cultures.

I am an observer first. I don’t just want to drop into a location, take a few photos, and leave. I believe the most powerful images emerge when you take the time to slow down, get to know the locals, and build genuine trust. It’s about returning to a place multiple times to uncover the layers of a story. I usually work with a 35mm or 50mm prime lens: close enough to be part of the moment, unobtrusive enough not to change it. I want to capture the emotional essence of a moment and the genuine connection between people and their environment. My commitment is to the people who allow me into their lives: I document life as it unfolds, and the story dictates the frame, never the other way around.
I'm open to working with travel magazines, outdoor brands, camera manufacturers and editorial platforms to deliver narratives that go beyond the surface. I don’t just want to show the world what a remote place looks like; I want to document stories that matter.
